WESTERN UNITED have claimed their first A-League championship on Saturday night, in only their third season after a 2-0 defeat of Melbourne City.

It was the first half that set up the victory. Aleksandar Prijović the hero, openning the scoring following a header off a corner kick as early as 100 seconds in. On the half hour mark, Prijović doubled Western’s lead, after a deflection and the VAR finding him onside the goal was awarded.

City had their chances in the second half, but were unable to capitalise. With no goals added in the second half, it was good enough to see Western United home, with the final whistle sparking wild scenes. Western had pulled off the upset, coming from fourth position, knocking out Wellington 1-0 in week 1’s Elimination Final. Knocking out Melbourne Victory 4-1 in the second leg and 4-2 on aggregate, to causing one of the great Grand Final upsets to defeat last years champions, and this years premiers Melbourne City.

Congratulations to John Aloisi, who tasted his first silverware as coach, who’s guidance was unbelievable in taking a third season team to a championship in so little time. This will build a big foundation for Western United’s future in the A-League and is a massive stepping stone for them. A well earned first title for Western United that no one can disagree with.
