AFL round 16 tips and predictions

We have a thrilling round of football ahead, beginning tonight with the Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs.

Carlton have the opportunity to continue their press for a top eight or even top four finish when they host St Kilda on Friday night Football.

We have a big Saturday of football, beginning with Essendon hosting the Sydney at the MCG, with the Swans a chance to keep up their top 8 credentials. Melbourne an opportunity to maintain top spot when they travel to face Adelaide. Geelong an opportunity to keep their top two spot when they host North Melbourne. While the most interesting clash comes on Saturday night with the Gold Coast Suns playing host to Collingwood in Saturday night football.

On Sunday, Richmond have the opportunity to bounce back when they host West Coast. Greater Western Sydney (GWS) take on the Hawks and the round wraps up with Fremantle hosting Port Adelaide.

The Gabba in Brisbane

Brisbane will host the Western Bulldogs tonight at the Gabba.

The Lions sitting in third with a 10-4 record. The Dogs in eighth with an 8-6 record.

The Lions looking to exact revenge for their one-point Semi Final defeat. The Bulldogs have won three of the last five clashes with the Brisbane Lions.

Brisbane are looking to bounce back from their 64-point defeat to Melbourne last week. The Dogs looking for their third consecutive victory, following their 42-point win over the Hawks last Friday.

The Lions started hot last week, with three goals in the first quarter. But only managed four more goals after quarter time. While the Dogs went on a scoring spree after only managing one goal in the first quarter, ending up with 19 goals in their victory. If the Dogs are to win, they will look to outscore the Lions and give their defence a hard time.

Marvel Stadium in Melbourne

Carlton will host the Saints in Friday night football at Marvel. Carlton making a push for the top four, sitting in fifth with a 10-4 record. St Kilda sitting in 10th with an 8-6 record.

St Kilda have won three of the last five clashes with the Blues. Carlton looking to continue their impressive form, which saw them defeat Fremantle last week by 31-points. St Kilda coming off two consecutive defeats, last week Sydney blew them off the park by 51-points and they only scored 32-points.

Carlton could really outscore the Saints in this clash, despite their amount of defenders injured, it is the likes of Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay down forward giving them the opportunity to kick big scores. It was also a domination from midfielder Sam Walsh who racked up 40 disposals last week. You would expect him to have a night out tomorrow.

Carlton are the team in form right now. They have momentum behind them. Curnow and McKay will kick a bag between them, Walsh and Patrick Cripps will dominate through the midfield and outpace the Saints. Carlton by 45-points.

The MCG in Melbourne

Essendon will host Sydney at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Sydney a game clear in the eight sitting in sixth with a 9-5 record. Essendon struggling in 16th with a 3-11 record.

Sydney have won three of the last five clashes with Essendon, including the last three consecutively. Sydney come into this clash full of confidence following their 51-point smashing of St Kilda last week. With Essendon struggling to compete, they will be hoping they can kick an even bigger score this week. Essendon had a surprising defeat to West Coast last week and it quite obviously reflects where they’re at right now.

The season end can’t come quickly enough for Essendon, Sydney will look to tear their defence apart and kick a high score.

Adelaide Oval in Adelaide

Adelaide will host Melbourne on Saturday afternoon at the Adelaide Oval. Adelaide in 13th with a 5-9 record. Melbourne are on top of the table with an 11-3 record.

Melbourne returned to the top of the table following a 64-point win over the Brisbane Lions last Thursday night. Adelaide returned to the winners list with a 57-point win over North Melbourne last Sunday.

Melbourne have plenty of scoring power, you would expect them to be very attacking against the Crows, and reach a similar score to their game against Brisbane last week of 117.

Geelong will host North Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. Geelong jumped into second position with a 10-4 record. North are dead last with the worst current record in the league of 1-13.

Geelong have won the last nine clashes with North, dating back to 2015. One would be very suprised if that trend didn’t continue tomorrow night. Geelong jumped to second following their three-point thrilling win over Richmond last Saturday. North’s last win came back in round 2, they enter this clash following a 57-point defeat to Adelaide last Sunday.

North’s defence has struggled to cope all season, it is expected Geelong will run all over North’s defence tomorrow night and kick another big score.

Collingwood have won four out of the last five clashes with Gold Coast. Collingwood enter this clash with five consecutive wins, including holding off the GWS Giants by 11-points last Sunday. Gold Coast lost to Port by two-points last Sunday, in a hot contested contest.

It will be a high scoring affair, it will come down to who can outscore who and who’s defence can hold up.

Richmond will host West Coast at the MCG this Sunday. Richmond sitting in ninth with an 8-6 record. West Coast in 17th with a 2-12 record.

Richmond dropped out of the 8 last week, following a three-point loss to Geelong. West Coast won just their second game for the year, with a 10-point triumph over Essendon last Friday night.

Richmond will look to bounce back in front of their home fans. They will look to outscore the Eagles and show they are still a side to be reckoned with.

The Hawks looking for their first win since round 10 when they upset the Brisbane Lions. GWS are on a two game loosing streak and will look to end it at home on Sunday.

Port have won three of the last five clashes with Fremantle, including the last three consecutively. Fremantle are looking to bounce back from their defeat to Carlton by 31-points last week. Port are looking to continue winning form, coming off a thrilling two-point win over Gold Coast last week.

Fremantle were outscored by the Blues last week. So they will want be very attacking in front of their home fans and kick away to a big win.
