Australia have qualified for their fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup. As they did to Uruguay in 2005, they defeated Peru on a penalty shootout 5-4. Andrew Redmayne the late substitute, with the save to send Australia through.
After a goalless 120 minutes, the game was sent into a penalty shootout. Australia led 5-4 by the sixth round and sudden death, with Alex Valera needing to score, Redmayne got his big gloves to it and secured Australia’s place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The players ran to him in jubilation as he stood their waiting with a huge grin on his face- and like John Aloisi’s iconic celebrating when he sent Australia to Germany with his top being waved around to the crowed. Redmayne’s huge grin and arms outstretched in celebration of delight, will long be iconic to so many adoring Aussie fans. Who can now book their tickets to Qatar for a fifth straight World Cup appearance.
