Australia has made it through to the Asia/South American playoff to face Peru, after they defeated the UAE 2-1 overnight.
After a goaless first half, Jackson Irvine gave Australia the lead in the 52nd minute from close range. The UAE were on terms three minutes later, Caio Canedo fired home from a low cross. The defining moment came in the 83rd minute, off a corner kick the UAE defence headed it into the path of Ajdin Hrustic, who fired a strong strike from long range that took a deflection but found the net. Sparking jubilant scenes from Australian players and fans.
It was good enough to see Australia home for a 2-1 win, seeing them through to face Peru for the final playoff to reach the Qatar World Cup, whilst eliminating UAE. Australia still has hope to qualify for their fifth consecutive tournament.
